Flight Delayed or Canceled? Here’s How to Get an Automatic Refund

Written by Andrew Lokenauth

New Airline Refund Rules

Airlines now have to give you your money back when things go wrong.

The days of begging airlines for your money back are over. Starting October 2024, you’ll get automatic refunds when your flight gets messed up. No more endless phone calls or complicated forms!

Key Changes at a Glance:

  • Automatic refunds (no need to ask!)
  • Money back within 7 days for credit cards
  • Clear rules about what counts as a “big delay”
  • Refunds for broken WiFi and lost bags

When Do You Get Your Money Back?

Domestic Flights

You’ll get an automatic refund if:

  • Your flight is canceled
  • Your flight is delayed by 3+ hours
  • They change your airport
  • They add extra stops to your trip

International Flights

For international trips, you’re covered when:

  • Your flight is canceled
  • There’s a 6+ hour delay
  • They switch your departure/arrival airport
  • They add connections you didn’t plan for

Lost Bags? You’re Covered!

Did the airline lose your bags? Here’s what you get:

  • Domestic flights: Refund if bags aren’t delivered within 12 hours
  • International flights: 15-30 hours (depends on flight length)
  • You’ll need to file a quick report first

WiFi and Other Services

Paid for something that didn’t work? You’ll get your money back for:

  • Non-working WiFi
  • Entertainment systems that fail
  • Seat selection fees (if you had to sit somewhere else)

How the Refund Process Works

It’s super simple now:

  1. Airlines must refund automatically
  2. You’ll get money back to your original payment method
  3. Credit card refunds: Within 7 days
  4. Other payments: Within 20 days

Tips for Travelers

Here’s how to make the most of these new rules:

  • Keep your booking confirmation handy
  • Take screenshots of delays/cancellations
  • Save receipts for any extra services
  • File bag reports right away if luggage is late

Examples

Let’s look at some common situations:

Example 1: Delayed Flight

Sarah’s flight from New York to Chicago was delayed by 4 hours.

  • Old rules: Might get a voucher if she complained
  • New rules: Automatic full refund offered

Example 2: Lost Bag

Tom paid $30 for checked luggage that arrived 15 hours late.

  • Old rules: Might lose the fee
  • New rules: Automatic refund of the bag fee

What’s Not Covered?

The rules don’t cover everything. You won’t get refunds for:

  • Delays under 3 hours (domestic)
  • Delays under 6 hours (international)
  • Personal expenses during delays
  • Hotels or car rentals you missed

Travel Tips

Planning holiday travel? Remember:

  • Book direct flights when possible
  • Keep important items in carry-on bags
  • Screenshot your confirmation emails
  • Save the airline’s customer service number
